These photographs, taken in Southern Thailand at the quiet end of the day, capture fleeting moments of stillness and softened light: fishermen moving through copper-toned water, longtail boats resting in mauve dusk, and a child gazing toward the horizon. Shot on Lomochrome Color ’92 200, the images reflect a sense of memory and nostalgia, embracing the subtle colour shifts of twilight. After years of responding to Southeast Asia’s harsh, saturated light with high contrast and deep shadows, these photographs mark a quieter approach, choosing patience and softness over intensity.

I think street photography often happens in fleeting moments, and capturing light lingering is more on luck. It relies heavily on a certain blessing and your ability to connect with the environment. I didn’t intentionally capture the two photos I submitted, nor do I consider myself a particularly sensitive person because I struggle to capture crowds with my usual equipment. I believe I was rewarded with a specific time and amount of street wandering, becoming the medium for pressing the shutter, through which my camera revealed and concealed the possibilities of quiet spaces. Perhaps it didn’t perfectly capture the truth, but the interaction between light and shadow and my camera occurred in real time.

The film’s distinctive teal and red tones not only captured the atmosphere of Hat Yai, but also reflected the feelings I experienced while being there. What struck me most upon arriving was how familiar everything felt. The people, the common use of Malay, and even the facial features reminded me so much of Malaysia that it felt both surprising and comforting, especially as someone not used to travelling outside the country.

There’s a certain deep nostalgia I feel whenever I cross these hidden corners, they feel like a memory that most of the world forgot, but they spaces themselves kept on going, these places remind me of home the most, home is not just a place, it’s a feeling.

Hidden behind the glass of a modern café, the light quietly reveals an older Malacca, the streets and buildings that once shaped the childhood of many who grew up here.
