Everything You Need to Know About Participating in FOTM 2026
FOTM 2026
What is FOTM 2026?
FOTM 2026 is a quarterly film photography programme built as a series of investigative “case files.” Each case invites photographers to observe, interpret, and document the world through film, exploring themes and perspective.
Who can participate?
Anyone with a film camera can join. Where you are beginners, hobbyists, or experienced photographers. If you can load a roll and shoot, you can participate.
Do I need to participate every month?
No. Monthly mini-challenges are optional. You can join only the main case, one or more monthly challenges, or follow the entire quarter.
However, photographers who participate in all monthly challenges, complete the main case, and work with all three Investigation Partner films will receive additional recognition and rewards for their full engagement with the programme.
For more details, please visit the Rewards Page. We will update the rewards for each case and challenge from time to time.
About the Cases & Challenges
What is a “case file”?
A case file is the central theme of the quarter. Each case presents a main direction to investigate, three featured Investigation Partner films, and optional monthly mini-challenges to explore the theme more deeply. Cases are designed to encourage observation, interpretation, and personal perspective through film.
What is an Investigation Partner?
Investigation Partners are the three featured films for the quarter. Each has a unique style, look, and character, offering a different lens through which to explore the case theme. Participants can choose one, two, or all three films depending on their interest or creative approach.
What are monthly mini-challenges?
Monthly mini-challenges are optional prompts designed to give participants a more focused angle on the case. Some monthly prompts are partner-specific, encouraging photographers to explore how each film stock interprets light, colour, and mood differently. These prompts offer a deeper challenge for those who want to experiment further.
How many films should I use?
You can submit work using one, two, or all three Investigation Partner films. Photographers who work with all three are eligible for Full Partnership Recognition, which rewards deeper exploration across all films.
Is there extra recognition for full participation?
Yes! Photographers who participate in all monthly mini-challenges, complete the main case, and work with all three Investigation Partner films will receive additional recognition and rewards for their full engagement with the programme.
About Submissions
Can I submit digital photos or scans?
Submissions must be film-based. Scans of developed film are acceptable if followed the theme and reflect on your perspective.
What should I include with my submission?
Include your images, the film used, and a short reflection explaining your thought process and how the work relates to the case theme. For more details, please refer to the Submission Page.
How do I submit my work?
Submissions are made via the online submission form on the website. Deadlines are case-specific and listed on each Case page.
Can I submit work on behalf of someone else?
No. All submissions must be created and submitted by the photographer themselves. Submitting work that is not your own or on behalf of someone else is not allowed.
Can I submit more than once per case?
You may submit more than once per case. Each submission should follow the guidelines and include your selected roll of film and a short reflection.
About Rewards & Recognitions
How does recognition work?
Recognition comes in three tiers:
Monthly Recognition – for participating in mini-challenges
Case Closure Recognition – for photographers engaging deeply with the main case
Full Partnership Recognition – for those working with all three Investigation Partner films
What are the rewards?
Rewards may include features on Instagram, curator notes, inclusion in the digital archive, creative credits, or vouchers. Rewards may vary per case and are subject to change.
Can the same photographer be recognised across multiple tiers?
Yes! A single photographer can receive recognition in more than one tier. For example, someone could be featured in a monthly mini-challenge, selected for Case Closure, and also receive Full Partnership Recognition for working with all three Investigation Partner films. Recognition is awarded based on meeting the criteria for each tier, not limited to one.
Do I get special access if I participate in all three challenges or all three films?
