Film photography asks you to slow down. Every frame is a decision, and every roll is a small act of patience, from loading the camera to waiting for the scans to come back. Each film has its own character, with its colours, grain and the way it handles light, and no two rolls ever turn out quite the same. That unpredictability is part of the joy.
Zontiga launched Film of the Month (FOTM) in 2024 with a simple idea: shoot a new film each month and see where it takes you. Some participants were revisiting old favourites, while others were loading a stock for the very first time. It quickly grew into a community of photographers trying new films, sharing their work and learning from each other, both online and in person.
Since then, FOTM has kept evolving, from the Star Wars–inspired The Film Awakens in 2025 to themed cases that invite photographers to respond to a prompt, not just a film. Along the way came photowalks, meetups and conversations with the photographers who keep film alive in Malaysia. Each year’s work is gathered into a photobook, and every open call is a chance to experiment, to be seen and to keep analogue photography going.

FOTM is run by a small team who shoot, read, develop and talk about film every day. We curate the open calls, select the work and put together the books. Come say hi at Zontiga stores in PJ and KL.
